But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

FEATURE ARTICLE BY Kempton Turner, Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship, Downtown & South
Knowing the Lord through the Word in 2010
Hear the word of the Lord describing a teenage young man named Sam in I Samuel 3:7,
“Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD/Yahweh, [because] the Word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.”
What? Samuel did not yet “know the LORD”? How could this be?
This is shocking, because in taking a quick look at I Samuel chapters 2 and 3, Sam seems to have had: 1) a desire for the Lord (3:3), 2) a desire to live morally opposite than the wicked (2:25-26), 3) a desire to serve the Lord in the temple (2:18), 4) a desire to submit to God-placed authority under his adopted father Eli (3:1)…
So, how can the text say that Samuel “did not know the Lord”? Well, because having a desire for the Lord and moral uprightness and a servant’s heart and an attitude of submission towards your parent(s) does not mean that you KNOW THE LORD.
A young, LORD-hating atheist can muster up these types of apparent virtues in his own strength under God’s common grace. And tragically, I fear that there are many young people at Bethlehem who fit Samuel’s description. They appear to desire the Lord. They appear to be morally upright. They appear to be serving gladly in various ministries. And they are compliant in the home. Yet, they do not KNOW the Lord! Let me pause here to say, “Praise the Lord” - there are many young people at BBC who do “know and are pressing on to know the Lord” (Hosea 6:3)! Nevertheless, we are begging God to increase this precious number among our young people!!
So, how is this number increased? What’s the answer? How can young people at BBC really KNOW the Lord? How did it happen for young, 14 yr. old Samuel?
Well, it first starts with the sheer, sovereign grace of God breaking into a young person’s heart and opening their eyes to the beauty of Christ, through THE WORD of GOD (Ps. 119:18)!
Listen as I Samuel 3:21 reveals how young Sam went from “not yet knowing the Lord” to knowing the Lord,
“And Yahweh appeared again at Shiloh, for Yahweh revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of Yahweh.”
There it is! Samuel began to really know Yahweh, because God moved in His sovereign, self-revealing grace and “revealed Himself” to Samuel by “the Word of Yahweh”!
And who is “the Word of Yahweh”? He is our Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:1, 14-18; 8:58)!
O parent/ student, this is how the Lord Jesus longs to reveal Himself to you….by His Word….by His literal words in the 66 books of canonized scripture known as the Holy Bible!
So, here are a few tools that we want to put into your hands in 2010, so that you might deeply and sweetly KNOW or continue to know this amazing God and His Son Jesus Christ, by the illumination of the Holy Spirit as you delight in the Scriptures:
